5 ways to give your candle jars a second life
By Ashmeeta Subra 16 November 2023
With it being National Recycling Week, it’s time to take a look at some common household items that you can give more than one life – starting with the humble candle.
Candles not only provide our homes with a pleasing aroma and cosy ambience, but also leave behind aesthetic jars once the wax has melted away. Instead of discarding them, consider making the most of it by repurposing for other use.
Here are some creative and eco-friendly ways to turn candle jars into items for function, décor, and more.
1. Containers to store lollies and snacks
Rather than buying storage jars or containers, use them to store your favourite lollies and other snacks. Here’s a quick video on three easy ways to remove residual candle wax from your jars.
Once you’ve removed all the wax, simply give the jars a thorough clean with soap and water, and they’re good as new.
As most candles jars come with lids, they’re perfect for storing treats, keeping them protected and sealed. This can help keep them fresh and reduce unnecessary food waste!
2. Planter for succulents or small plants
Transform the jars into planters for your succulents or a DIY terrarium with some soil, small plants, and other decorative items you’d like. If you’ve got a knack for gardening and love plants, this is a great opportunity to show off your green thumbs.
Consider gifting your new creation to a friend, or even keeping it by your work desk to add a nice touch of green to your workspace.
3. DIY candles
Transform your candle jars into brand new, personalised candles from scratch using simple steps. All you need is some candle wax (we recommend soy wax for a more sustainable choice), candle wicks, and any fragrance of your choice. DIY-ing your own candle has never been simpler, unlocking endless possibilities as you experiment with various scents.

4. Designated holder for small items
Are you often misplacing keys, jewellery, or other loose items? Repurpose candle jars into designated holders for go-to items you constantly reach for, so you don’t have to worry about misplacing them in spots you’ll miss!
You could also gather keepsakes or coins you have lying around and turn it into a small jar of collectibles to keep them organised in one place, instead of chucking them into random nooks around the house.
5. Sustainable gift packaging
Reusing empty candle jars that you already have lying around is a great alternative to purchasing gift wrap materials, helping you save on costs.
As the festive season comes around the corner, it’s a perfect time to reuse jars as unique and sustainable packaging for your Christmas bakes and other heartfelt gifts to loved ones.
In essence, there are many ways to repurpose candle jars for various uses. By reusing items we already have at home, we can maximise the functions of materials beyond their intended purpose, contributing to a more sustainable environment.
If you have excess candle jars you’re keen on giving away, this initiative accepts all kinds of candle jars (in good quality and clean condition) to be repurposed and donated to causes supporting domestic violence survivors.
