A popular London food market is rolling out a returnable lunchbox scheme in an attempt to reduce packaging waste.
The Tachbrook Street Market in Pimlico, Central London is being operated by a startup called CauliBox in partnership with the local Westminster Council and food vendors in the area.
Diners pay £5 (just under $10) to subscribe to the scheme and are given their takeaway meal in a reusable lunchbox. After finishing their food, patrons take their lunchbox to a nearby drop-off point, where they are collected, cleaned and delivered back to vendors to restart the process.
“Traders told us that they wanted to stop using single-use containers,” explained a spokesperson for Westminster Council.
Within days of the scheme’s start, it was over-subscribed, with 180 people signing up and more than 50 registering their interest. So far, the scheme has saved an estimated 350 single-use boxes within the first two weeks of the scheme operating.
The boxes are made in China from a mix of bamboo and recyclable polypropylene (a microplastic). Each can be used up to 500 times before being decommissioned.
