Fluorescent Light Tube Recycling Service
Council has introduced a free recycling service for used fluorescent tubes. Collection boxes are located at a number of sites within the Shire so that residents can safely deposit their used fluorescent tubes for recycling.
Fluorescent tubes contain mercury, one of the most hazardous industrial pollutants. Mercury can seep out of landfills and contaminate waterways and soil and is so toxic that the mercury contained in one fluorescent tube can pollute 30,000 litres of water beyond safe drinking standards. Recycling old fluorescent tubes prevents pollution of the environment and allows the glass, aluminium and other materials in the tubes to be re-used.
It should be noted that the newer compact fluorescent tubes cannot be placed in the collection boxes because their different shape can cause breakages inside the boxes which could release toxic materials.
