NOTE: Cowra Council recently placed a new order for reusable shopping bags for residents; these should be available in the near future. Until this time, Council can still receive plastic shopping bags from residents for recycling.
In 2004, Cowra Council was one of 26 Councils that joined together with Netwaste to run a ‘Plastic Bag Replacement Program’. The program allowed residents to exchange 25 plastic bags for one reusable bag, reducing the dependence on plastic bags with the aim of ultimately making Cowra plastic bag free. The community responded overwhelmingly, signalling their commitment to Cowra becoming plastic bag free.
At the completion of the Netwaste program, Cowra Council developed its own ‘Cowra’ bag and commenced an ongoing Plastic Bag Replacement Program. The community has continued to support the initiative, with a steady flow of plastic bags being exchanged. The next step for Council is to work towards the goal of making the town plastic bag free.
Plastic bags can be exchanged at Cowra Council, Materials Recycling Facility (MRF), Woodstock General Store or Gooloogong Handy Mart. For more information, contact the Operations Department on (02) 6340 2070.
