Council Recycling/Waste Notice Board - Town of Cottesloe

The Town of Cottesloe now has a well established 3-bin system and has been diverting 55% of household residential waste from landfill.By focusing primarily on separation at the source, ie, by the householder, what was once considered to be rubbish and disposed of in landfill sites, is now a useful and valuable commodity. Reducing waste, re-using items and recycling green waste and other materials, along with community education and volunteer participation, remain the key to a successful, low cost, waste strategy. The Town of Cottesloe's Waste Minimisation Strategy is based on the key principles of Ecologically Sustainable Development (ESD) with particular regard to the environmental impact of all aspects of the program, the social acceptability and benefits, and financial considerations. The objective of the program is to reduce the tonnage of waste disposed of in landfill by encouraging the reduction of waste, increasing the separation of recyclable materials and promoting the reuse and recycling of green and organic waste.On-going community education continues to be a high priority. The Cottesloe Volunteer Earth Carers provide outreach to the community and are focusing on waste reduction, reuse and recycling, strategies to re-use and recycle organic waste, composting education for residents and community groups and community education displays at special events. The variety of conventional and emerging waste processing technologies provides both challenges and opportunities to any authority engaged in the management of waste. The Town of Cottesloe in conjunction with the Western Metropolitan Regional Council will examine the impact of these technologies on an ecologically sustainable basis. In addition to this the Council will inform and educate the community and provide the framework to enable the facilitation of new technology.
